The Pilgrim's Pledge
A short poem
There is a line in Pilgrim’s Progress which reads, “This hill, though high, I covet to ascend; The difficulty will not me offend. For I perceive the way to life lies here. Come, pluck up, heart; let's neither faint nor fear.”
Inspired by the first line, I wrote what I call The Pilgrim’s Pledge
The hill, though high,
I covet to ascend.
The true road, the straight path
Knows no turn nor bend.
For though the way is thin and steep
That leads unto the light
I chose to bow, I chose the plow,
And pledge me to the fight.
This hill, though high,
I covet to ascend
I will not now play the goat*
Whom whim and trial offend
I see the signs of those who’ve gone
And know the way is sure.
The road to Christ for those He’s bought
Forever shall endure.
*Matthew 25:31-46
